The annual event returns Saturday, Jan. 21. Native American Celebration Portland Community College's Traditional Winter Powwow is one of Portland's largest celebrations of Native American culture and tradition. On Saturday, Jan. 21, the 13th edition of this com­ munity jewel will take place from 9 a.m. to noon in the Health and Technology Building Gymnasium on the Sylvania Campus in southwest Portland. Admission and parking is free. The first grand entry starts at 1 p.m. and the second at 7 p.m. In addition to drumming and dancing, there will be children activities, a college fair and a commu- nity dinner at 5:30 p.m. There will also be raffle prizes, Native American crafts and food vendors. American Sign Language will be available. Bob Tom of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz and Grand Ronde will serve as m aster o f ceremonies. Her culturally rich background has supplied her with the driving force of Dominican rhythm and the incredible swing of the Cyrille Ai mee French Gypsies. Aimée was a finalist in the presti­ gious Thelonious Monk Vocal Compe­ tition of 2010, performing in front of a jury consisting of A1 Jarreau, Kurt Elling, D ianne R eev es, and D ee Dee Bridgewater. In 2007 she won top hon­ ors in the Montreux Jazz Festival Vocal Competition. Brazilian guitarist Diego Figueiredo has been the recipient of several awards from the Montreux Jazz Festival Compe­ tition and Icatu Hartford (Rio di Janeiro). Super-Hero Comedy Shows Portland comedian and Second City alum auGi and award-winning PBS writer Slash Coleman will present the world premiere of “Big Plastic Heroes.” The comedy features two auto­ biographical solo-performances that highlight what bad things can hap­ pen when oddball teen boys try to be their action-hero idols. Each night also brings appear­ ances by two Portland storytellers, who will tell their own 10-minute “misplaced hero” story. The local stortytellers include Stacey Hallal, Meg Worden, Ry Stroud, Andrew Bynum, Jim my Radosta, Karol Collymore, Cory Huff, Meagan Kate, Penny Walter and Molly Norton.
