R alph A b ern ath y kept him awake all night with his snoring. “N ever again, sweet Jesus!” King roared in mock rage. King did not confess indiscre tions, Belafonte says, but he did indicate that his marriage to Corretta had become less than blissful, and that he envied the entertainer’s ability to divorce his own black wife and marry a white woman. “M artin’s pedestal was a lot higher and more fragile than mine,” Belafonte writes. “He was a moral leader. He knew how little it would take for him to be perceived as a hypocrite.” Belafonte, close enough to King to know his faults, writes, “ I had never met anyone as true to the teachings o f Christ. His kindness, his sense o f ju s tice, above all his hum ility - these were astounding to me. He was the first true spiritual force 1 met. And w hile I kept my d o u b ts, his sp iritu a lity changed my life.” To Place Your Classified Advertisement Contact: Phone: 503-288-0033 Fax: 503-288-0015 e-mail: classifieds@portlandobserver.com Page 15 C A N N O N ’S =FUB E X P R E S S ^ S a lu te s Martin Luther King Jr. Chicken ♦ Pork Ribs ♦ Beef Ribs Catering & Take-Out Our Specialty: Real Hickory Smoked Bar-B-Q Wayne & Juanita Cannon (Proprietors) Mon-Thur ll:30am -9:00pm • Fri-Sat ll:3 0 a m -ll:0 0 p m • Sun l:00pm-7oopm 5410 N.E. 33rd 5 0 3 -2 8 8 -3 8 3 6 FIX-IT FAIR T Q 3 0 3 HEALTHY FAMILIES, HEALTHY HONES EXHIBITS & WORKSHOPS CREAT GIVEAWAYS LUNCH & CHILDCARE PROVIDED SATURDAYS 8 :3 0 A.N. - 3 P.N.
