GOP’s Political Gift to the President
Obama stands
strong against
nonsense
by
J udge G reg
M athis
C ongressional Re
publicans have uninten
tionally given President
Obama a gift with their inept and
negative approach to creating
public policy that meets the needs
of the average American.
Prior to the Christmas holi
day, Congress was locked in a
debate over whether or not to
temporarily extend both tax cuts
to middle class Americans and
unemployment benefits.
Republicans, as is becoming
the norm, fought hard to set up
road blocks so the legislation
w ouldn’t pass, saying they’d
rather wait until the full
Congress could pass a year
long extension, saying a
temporary extension made
no sense. Clearly the Re
publicans didn’t give much
thought to what to Ameri
can families would have to do to
m ake ends m eet w hile they
waited what could be months for
that full bill to be debated and
passed.
U nderstandably frustrated
with the political games, Presi
dent Obama took his case to the
American people, asking Ameri
cans to share what the extra
J lo r tla n b (O bserver
money would mean to their bot
tom line. Realizing that continu
ing to fight the issue would hurt
their chances in the 2012 elec
tions, Republicans finally did the
right thing and let the bill pass.
Obama was victorious. But
that isn’t the only gift the Repub
licans gave him.
W hile m aking his plea to the
country, O bam a displayed the
sam e characteristics o f that
bold candidate who swept into
the W hite H ouse nearly four
years ago. He show ed that he
could and w ould stand strong,
even in the face o f nonsensical
R epublican oppo sitio n , and
deliver.
Even a novice political ob
server is aw are that President
O bam a has faced several m a
jo r challenges during his first
term. Tensions created by ren
egade R epublicans w ith no
other agenda than to see him
fail h a v e n ’t helped m atters
much.
Thank God the Republicans
woke up and did the right thing
by the American people. Let’s
hope that, regardless of who is in
power after the 2012 elections,
they will continue to put the needs
of American people ahead of
their own.
