Electricity Rates Change
The New Year rang in new electricity rates for
residential customers of PGE and Pacific
Power. The rates went down about one per­
cent for customers of Portland General Elec­
tric, but Pacific Power’s customers saw rates
increase by about 3 percent.

Arson Spree Arrest
A former Vancouver resident, Harry B urkhart,
24, is being held without bail as the main
suspect in a string of arsons in Hollywood,
Calif, and the surrounding Los Angeles area.
Firefighters have battled 53 deliberately-set
fires in the area in recent days, causing more
than $2 million in damage.

More Drunk Drivers
On this New Year’s Eve, more people in
Oregon were arrested for driving under the
influence than last year. According to Or­
egon State Police, 47 drivers, up from 41 last
year, were arrested for DUII between Satur­
day and Sunday.

Presidential Vote Begins
In the first statewide contest of the 2012
presidential election season, the race to win
Iowa’s caucuses kicked-off with voting on
Tuesday. Each Republican presidential hope­
