April 27 - Andre Baugh is in a position of leadership as the new
chair of the Portland Planning and Sustainability Commission. His
chief assignment is helping shape the Portland Plan, a new docu­
ment to govern public policies and private development.
Playhouse Keeps the Diversity
May 11 - Portland Playhouse, a local theater company that has found a home in a former church on North­
east Prescott Street, works at keeping the diversity of northeast Portland reflected in their productions with
the play of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

June 1 5 - A new generation of African-American gangsters are
continuing a cycle of violence likely started by gang members of
their parents’ generation. Police believed the latest activity
between rivals has resulted in at least six local gang-related death
in the last six months.

Portland gets good marks for water
quality except during periods of rain,

Troubled Bar Closes Doors
July 13 — Samuel A. Thompson, the
owner of Seeznin’s Bar and Lounge in
northeast Portland, closes the business
after the Oregon Liquor Control
Commission issues several restrictions.
It followed the fatal shooting of a man
in a parking lot across the street from
the establishment.
