The Jefferson Dancers form a group photo from the 2010-11 school year. A new season for the high school dance program will kick off with a meet and greet fundraiser on Saturday at the Rufuge in southeast Portland. Jefferson Dancers Meet and Greet Fundraising event to help launch the new season On Saturday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m., the Jefferson Dancers will host a fundraising celebration and meet and greet event at the Refuge in Southeast Portland. You’re invited to support the program, mingle with the dancers for the 2011-12 season, as well as artistic director Steve Gonzales, and enjoy complimentary wine and appetizers - all set to the sounds of the Portland Woodshed Jazz Orchestra. The Jefferson Dancers is the elite dance company of the nationally-known dance department at Jefferson High School. The program is dedicated to education and preparing students for the depth of commitment it takes to physically and mentally prepare them for a performing arts career. The cost of admission and any additional donations will support the program, and make it possible to bring in guest choreographers to set new works for the company. They’ll also financially assist the dancers to travel next spring for the 1 Oth National High School Dance Festival in Philadelphia, Pa. “In 2005, our dance program was nearly elim i nated. We are grateful that the district and the adm inistration have allow ed our program to con tinue,” said Lori Dones, com pany m anager for the Jefferson Dancers. “This year, we will be operating on a reduced budget from Portland Public Schools. This is why we are reaching out to our supporters for donations.” Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Contact Lori Dones at ldones@pps.net or call 503- 552-6044 for more information. The Jefferson Dancers are also raising funds by offering to book events. Whether it’s a cultural arts assembly. Black History Month, dance class work shop, or a 45-minute show for a student body and staff, the Jefferson Dancers are happy to perform. Soul Food Chitlin Festival Event to support youth culinary program Po’ Shines Cafe de la Soul, a non profit soul food cafe in the Kenton neighborhood, will be hosting a chitlin festival on Friday, Nov. 11 and Saturday, Nov. 12. The event will feature a variety of chitlin dishes for both seasoned and curious eaters to try, including fried chitlins, traditional stewed T.hitlins, and more. All proceeds will go toward the launching a culinary training program for at-risk youth and young adults. Over the last four years, Po'shines has not only grown into an estab lished soul food restaurant, but has also helped many individuals on their road back to success as part of a church ministry. “When we started, we had no idea what we were in for,” said M ackenzie Doyle, m anager o f Po’Shines, “but day by day, piece by piece, person by person, every thing has seemed to fall into place, and now we are able do things and help people in ways that we never could have imagined.” This is the second year that Po'Shines has brought the rare south ern cuisine of chitlins (also called chitterlings) to Portland diners. Chit lins, pig intestines, are not something often seen in the city, let alone the Northwest, however staff at Po'shines weren't surprised by the turnout to last year’s event, and the request for chitlins throughout the year. The festival will also feature local m usic and o th e r fe s tiv itie s. Po’ Shines is located at 8139 N. Den ver Ave.
