Maker to Add

up Swan
Island plant
Daimler Trucks will add a
second shift and 350 new
jobs to its Swan Island
manufacturing plant.
Daimler Trucks has announced
the addition of a second shift and
plans to ramp up production at its
Portland Truck Manufacturing Plant
on Swan Island in north Portland,
creating about 350 new jobs at the
facility by the end of 2012.
The additional workers represent
a nearly 50 percent increase in per
sonnel at the plant and will include
approximately 330 shop employees,
and an additional 20 engineering
and support positions to facilitate
increased production.
The Swan Island facility exclu
sively produces heavy-duty West
ern Star brand Class 8 trucks for use
in mining, logging, oil field and con
struction, as well as on-highway
trucks and other specialized ve
hicles, representing about 2 percent
of North American truck sales this
year.

expectations for continued growth

The Portland plant currently em
ploys approximately 700 shop em
ployees and 50 engineers, manag
ers and support staff.

Hiring of new employees will
begin in November and the new
production shift is slated to be at full
capacity by February. A second
wave of hiring is planned for next
summer to support the projected
increase in demand.
Mayor in Asia on
Trade Mission
Mayor Sam Adams was midway through
a 10-day trip to Shanghai. Suzhou, Hong
Kong, and Tokyo Tuesday.
Adams is visiting Asia with a consortium
of Portland and Oregon business represen
tatives to promote Portland’s new clean
tech export initiative, “We Build Green Cit
ies,” recruit new investment for Portland,
and support the growth of Portland busi
ness overseas.
Adams will also be making important
cultural stops. He is meeting Portland
Suzhou Sister City Association leaders;
and will speak at a fundraiser in support of
Portland Japanese Garden Expansion,
hosted by US Ambassador John Roos, re
nowned architect Kengo Kuma, and others Sam Adams
