Oregon Juneteenth Jazz
and Heritage Concert
The National Juneteenth O b­
servance Foundation is present­
ing its f ir s t a n n u a l O re g o n
Juneteenth Jazz and Heritage Con­
cert. This year's tribute honors
Clara Mae Peoples, the "M other
o f Juneteenth," and fam ed Port­
land Jazz drummer Ron Steen. The
event is hosted by Juneteenth
Oregon, the local organizer for
Portland’s celebration, the largest
in the state.
The concert will be held on Tues­
day, Oct. 25 from 6p.m. to 10 p.m. at
the Red Lion Hotel Portland Con­
vention Center, 1021 N.E. Grand
Ave. Tickets are $20 in advance and
$25 at the door.

Peoples rallied Kaiser Shipyard
workers to take a few minutes to
recognize June 19,1865 - the day
when the last slaves in Texas were
freed by the Union Army. Her en­
thusiasm for Juneteenth has encour­
aged people in other US cities to
hold celebrations that include pa­
rades and festivals.

Portland’s 11th Annual
at 9.6 Percent
Diversity Employment Day
New figures for Oregon's unem­
ployment rate was pegged at 9.6
percent on Tuesday, unchanged
from the 9.6 percent reported last
month. Meanwhile, the y.S . sea­
sonally adjusted unemploym ent
has remained at 9.1 percent for the
past three months.
Nonfarm payroll employment
declined by 600jobs in September,
following a gain of 1,200 in August,
according to the Oregon Employ­
ment Division.
The state's seasonally adjusted
unemployment rate has been below
10 percent for the past six months,
since March, when the rate was 9.9
percent. The recent low point for
Oregon's rate was in May, when it
reached 9.3 percent.
Prior to May, the rate generally
had been declining since reaching a
recent high of 11.6 percent in both
May and June 2009.
In September, 178,174 Orego­
nians were unemployed. This is
19,738 fewer individuals than in
September 2010 when 197,912 Or­
egonians were unemployed.
