Immigrants Honored in Parkrose
M iles o f farm land tilled by im m i­
grants once surrounded w hat is now
a traffic m edian dividing N ortheast
98th A venue and Sandy B oulevard,
the site chosen for a bronze statue
installed last w eek for the 100th
anniversary o f the Parkrose c o m ­
munity.
The life-size statute is a historic
sym bol honoring Portland’s lifelong
im m igrant populations.
A ttending the unveiling w ere the
creators and backers o f the project,
w ell-know n Portland artist Jim Gion,
w ho m olded and sculpted the piece
from clay and bronze; foundry ow ner
Jim C alcagano; and the p ro je c t’s
director, Joe Rossi.
The R ossi fam ily em igrated from
Italy and w as one o f three fam ilies
that once o w n ed a m ajority o f the
farm land in the Parkrose area.
T he p ro je c t’s inform ation b o o k ­
let calls the statue "an everlasting
sym bol to P o rtla n d ’s gratitude for
the co ntributions o f o u r im m igrant
citizen s,” and the statue site, “an
ideal location,” view able from the
thousand o f vehicles that buzz by
daily in four directions.

Lee H orsley II, 22, w ere taken to the
hospital w ith non-life threatening
gunshot w ounds. Police said nei­
ther m an w ere co o p erativ e w ith in­
vestigators. It has not been d eter­
m ined if they w ere the intended tar­
gets o f the shooting.
A fter receiving n um erous 911
reports o f shots fired, police offic­
ers arrived on the scene and o b ­
served that the b ar had been struck
num erous times by gunfire that broke
the w indow s o f the business. A car
parked on 79th A venue also had
m ajo r dam age as a result o f bullet
strikes.
