panic and American Indian, they
never get the chance to celebrate
their first birthday.
Since 1997, the Healthy Birth Ini
tiative has received funding to re
duce the infant mortality rate in
Multnomah County, and is currently
in its fourth funding cycle of pro
moting community-based maternal
and child health programs that fo
cus on the reduction of infant mor
tality, racial disparities, and low birth
weight.
Because of the racial disparities
in infant mortality, the last two cycles
have served African-American fami
lies exclusively.
Program participants, along with
community agency representatives
and other community members, are
engaged and actively involved in
the quest to eliminate health dis
parities in their own lives and their
community.
'At the recognition event, the
community partners were given
credit for their dedication to the
health of mothers, fathers, and chil
dren before, during, and in between
pregnancies. The International Cen
ter for Traditional Childbearing,
Urban League of Portland and March
of Dimes, received certificates of
appreciation for their long-term ser
vices to the community to help re
duce infant mortality and increase
healthy birth outcomes and experi
ences.
