T he cen ter at S outheast 82nd A venue and D ivision, w hich opened in 2004 after m oving from another S outheast 82nd A venue location, has experienced the m ost rapid en ­ rollm ent grow th o f any PC C loca­ tion. C ollege officials say the site w ill eventually accom m odate m ore than 20,000 students annually, up from nearly 11,000 now . T he center has recorded a 31 percent increase in students since 2008. T he population has not only g o t­ ten larger, but also it has becom e m ore diverse. M inorities m ake up 39 percent o f the student body (11.4 percent A sian, 11.3 percent A frican A m erican and 8.5 percent H ispanic) up from 35.8 percent three years earlier. G round w ill be broken on the $39 m illion project this spring. The class and program additions will allow students to earn degrees w ithout having to leave the cen ter for another PC C cam pus. C urrently, the cen ter has 26 classroom s and the bond will double the space d e ­ voted to classroom s, labs, study space, gathering areas and library. "Since w e don't have a library w e have no real area fo r students to h a v e a q u ie t p la c e ," said L u is R odriguez-G arcia, academ ic ad v is­ ing coordinator. "W e have a m ix o f activities in o u r G reat Hall, from stu­ dents studying to others ju s t h a n g ­ ing out. It's hard to balance those activities for som e students." A key co m p o n en t o f the expansion will be adding m ore science labs for biology, chem istry and physics classes as w ell as career training facilities, classroom s, and a library, co m p u ter resource and tutoring center. T his w ill go hand in hand w ith e x ­ pansion o f all student services and resource d evelopm ent d epartm ents, including a new ch ild care facility. "O ur Southeast P ortland c o m m u ­ nity w ill be b etter served as a result o f the ex pansion o f the cen ter into a cam pus," said C raig K olins, Extender Learning C am pus president.
