E dw ards, believed to be the oldest

w hose roots stretched back to blues
legend R obert Johnson, died early
M onday in his C hicago hom e. He
w as 96.
E dw ards had a w eak heart and his
health seriously declined in M ay.
B om in 1915 in Shaw , M iss.,
E dw ards learned the guitar grow ing
up and started playing p ro fessio n ­
ally at age 17 in M em phis.
H e cam e to C h icag o in the 1940s
and played on M axw ell Street, small
clubs and street com ers. By the
1950s E dw ards had played w ith a l­
m ost every bluesm an o f note —
in c lu d in g H o w lin ' W o lf, L ittle
W alter, C harlie Patton and M uddy
W aters. A m ong E dw ards' hit songs
w ere "Long T all W om an B lues,"
"G am blin M an" and "Just Like Jesse
Jam es."
E dw ards played his last show s in
A pril at the Juke Joint Festival in
C larksdale, M iss., Frank said.
"B lues ain't never going any­
w here," E dw ards told T he A ssoci­
ated Press in 2008. "It can get slow ,
but it ain't going now here. Y ou play
a low dow n dirty sham e slow and
lonesom e, my m am a dead, m y papa
across the sea I ain't dead but I'm
ju s t supposed to be blues. Y ou can
ta k e th a t sa m e b lu e s, m a k e it
uptem po, a shuffle blues, that's w hat
rock 'n' roll did w ith it. So blues ain't
g o in g n o w h e re. A in 't g o in ' n o ­
w here."
Edw ards w on a 2008 G ram m y for
traditional blues album and received
a G ram m y Lifetim e A chievem ent
aw ard in 2010.
