to eat anything because of my expe
riences of the month.”
13-year-old Yusif Tuffa, raised
Muslim his entire life, agreed.
“All your bad deeds go away if
you fast,” he said.
“Fasting is only for the sake of
Allah, and it’s only known to Allah”
said Poole-Dawan. “We provide
food for those in need because you
can’t fast if you don’t have food,”
she said.
“We have seen our people divide
their food in half so they can see
others eat.”
This year's Ramadan is the first
for new community member Ibeth
Hernandez, who is fasting for the
first time. On Monday she visited
the M osque for prayer in the
women’s Musalla area.
“Everybody asked me if I was
excited for Ramadan, and I said I
w asn't looking forward to being
hungry,” Hernandez said. “But now,
I am sad it is almost over.”
Poole Dawan smiled with her
words.
Before leaving, she asked me to
choose a head covering I felt con
nected to, and then blessed the scarf
for al 1 those who have helped me get
to where 1 am currently in life. She
said she believes “we are all people
of the book.”
“All of us have equal responsi
bility for the life of the community,
and the mosque has to be main
tained by its believers.” she said.
“Ramadan is a time for us to come
together.”
