Portland Parks and Recre
ation offers a very cool pro
gram for teens that teaches them
DJ skills.
DJ Academy students at the
U niversity Park Com m unity
Center in north Portland use the
mixing board and other equip
ment to produce music for high
school dances, businesses and
parties at a low cost.
The program recently worked
in partnership with Alii Sports
to give the participating Port
land teens the opportunity to
experience the excitement of
the Dew Tour skateboarding
championships in Portland ear
lier this month.
DJ Academy students spun
music at the Dew Tour all day.
This experience allowed the
youth, ages 12-18, the opportu
nity to showcase the skills they
learned at University Park.
Instructor Joshua Stohl, a pro
fessional DJ who has a teaching
certificate from Concordia Uni
versity, is in charge of the pro
gram. Stohl has been connecting
with youth through music as a DJ
instructor with the parks bureau
since 2009.
The next class runs from Sept.
27 through Dec. 6. For more
information, call the University
Park Community Center at 503-
823-3631.
