A hom egoing celebration for Sue
C arolyn C arey, w ho died on Aug. 5,
2011, will be held on Saturday, Aug.
20 at 1 p.m. at the International Fel
lowship, 4401 N.E. 122nd Ave.
Sue C arolyn C arey was bom in
V anport on Nov. 4, 1944 to Rev.
B ooker T and Mrs. G racie Carey, the
third o f four children. Sue accepted
the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal
savior at a very early age while in the
M ethodist C hurch where she was
nurtured and reared in the fear and
adm onition o f the Lord.
She and her family m oved to Port
land where she attended H olladay
and Eliot Elem entary Schools and
Girls Polytechnic High School in 1962.
A fter graduating, she m oved to Se
attle and w orked as a head cook.
Later she m oved back to Portland to
attend Portland State U niversity to
becom e a teacher.
She was em ployed as a cook at the
O regon Health Science University; a
Language Arts T eacher at Sabin El-
athers

until her health began to fail.
Sue was a very proud m other o f
her tw o children. She loved to write
poetry and cook. She would feed
anybody w ho was hungry or w anted
some good o le’ hom e cooking. She
was know n for m aking dressing and
peach cobbler at m any family and
church dinners.
She served as the board chairper
son for the Portland Sickle Cell A ne
mia Foundation; and was honored
by O regon Gov. Vic A tiyeh for her
work to strengthen families with the
W hite H ouse Conference o f Families
Taskforce; and by Oregon Gov. Neil
G oldsm ith for being a m em ber o f the
Oregon Health Council for three years.
H er favorite color was red, and she
was often heard saying “W hen I’m
old. I’ll w ear purple and red” and she
did!
A dhering to the principles and
practices o f her parents, she was a
devoted and active m em ber o f the
Sm ith C hapel C M E C hurch where
she served in various areas o f the
m inistry under the pastorship o f the
Late Rev. Ira D. M um ford.
In 1984 she u n ited w ith the
G reater Saint Stephen M B C under
the leadership o f the Late Dr. A.
B e rn a rd D e v e rs an d fa ith fu lly
strived for the advancem ent o f the
church for 26 years. She served in
various leadership roles: d eaco n
ess, w o m e n ’s m inistry leader, S u n
day school teacher, and ch airp er
son o f the finance m inistry. For
years she w as instrum ental in o r
chestrating the annual O le ’ L and
m ark D ay for the m o th er’s m inistry.
In 2003 she w as licensed by Pastor
V icto r D. R eynolds to preach the
gospel as an evangelist; she also
ch aired several church an n iv ersa
ries, p asto r ap preciations, and the
installation service for O reg o n ’s first
A frican A m erican fem ale pastor o f a
M issionary B aptist C hurch.
She resided in the R osem ont Court
Apartment where her work as an e van-
gelist did not cease; she hosted the
church’s second Alice O. G uinn Food
Pantry, and conducted a bible class
and a poetry w riting class.
E v angelist C arey w as a generous
g iv er o f her tim e, talents and her
treasure. R egardless to w here she
w as o r how she w as feeling, if she
saw a need, she w ould do ev ery
thing w ithin h er p ow er to assist.
She alw ays put the needs o f others
before h er ow n. She exercised the
skills o f a law yer, doctor, counselor,
clinical therapist, advocate, teacher,
life coach, m other, grandm other,
sister and friend. She n ev er m et a
stranger.
She believed in the p o w er o f
p ray er and the L ord in spirit and in
truth. T he m anifestation o f C hrist in
her life touched the lives o f m any,
even until h er last breath. She was
preceded in death by h er parents,
and sister, M arg ie C u rry , uncle
C happel E dw ards, cousin Jeannie
Edwards and niece Kellie Jean Carey,
all w hom she loved dearly.
She will forever be loved and
tre a su re d by h e r c h ild re n : L isa
M cC onnell o f A rlington, Texas; and
M ichael (C onnie) M cC onnell o f
Portland; sister Joyce Jones o f R ich
m ond, C alif.; b ro th er H enry (Fran)
C arey o f T igard; 13 grand children;
three great grand children; and a
host o f nieces, nephew s, cousins
and friends.
