Franklin to Sing at MLK Statue Dedicatior

M artin L uther K ing Jr. to churches
in the early days o f the civil rights
m ovem ent, he usually m ade a spe­
cial request for her to sing one song
in particular: "Take M y H and, P re­
cious Lord."
O n Sunday, A ug. 28, w hen a
m em orial in his honor is dedicated
on the N ational M all in W ash in g ­
ton, Franklin will again sing the song
for h er m entor and friend.
"I'm really looking forw ard to this
m om ent. It's going to be another
great, great m om ent in A m erican
history, and in A frican-A m erican
history," F ranklin said in a phone
interview T uesday.
"It m eans as well, after so m any
years o f traveling with him in the early
'60s at the advent o f the civil rights
m ovem ent, that again, m any years
later, I w ould perform in his honor and
in tribute to him, and I’m really looking
forw ard to that m om ent and singing
one o f his favorite songs, his m ost

the civil rights hero w ith a statue in
the nation's capital. She even h ead ­
lined an all-star concert at R adio
C ity M usic Hall in N ew Y ork C ity in
2007 to raise funds for the m em orial,
w hich has been years in th e m aking.
"I ju s t think that it is a n od to how
far we have com e, and w hat a tre­
m endous spot fo r him to be him ,
betw een the L incoln M em orial and
the Jefferson M em orial on the m all.
W e've co m e a long w ay," she said.
"I think it's trem endous."
