Mark Hatfield Dies at Age 89
Republican championed civil rights
Form er Sen. M ark H atfield, an
outspoken critic o f w ar w hose lib ­
eral view s often put him at odds with
fellow R epublicans but endeared
him to O regonians, died Sunday. H e
w as 89.
Hatfield, w ho had becom e increas­
ingly frail in recent years, died at a
Portland residence, said G erry Frank,
a longtim e friend and form er aide.
A lso a fo rm er governor, H atfield
w as the longest serving U.S. sen a­
to r in O regon history, serving five
term s from 1967 to 1997.
H is causes — ch am pioning the
environm ent, the needy and hum an
rights — w on him adm irers across
the political spectrum .
H e w as one o f the first elected
officials in overw helm ing w hite O r­
egon to push fo r civil rights legisla­
tion. H e supported a public accom ­
m odations bill in 1953 after Paul
R obeson and M arian A nderson per­
form ed in Salem yet had to spend
th e n ig h t in P o rtla n d b e c a u s e
S alem 's hotels had a "N o C oloreds"
policy.
"N o one has had a m ore p ro ­
found im pact on O regon in the last
h a lf century than M ark H atfield,"
said G ov. John K itzhaber, a D em o­
crat. "W e've lost a true statesm an
w hose legacy lives on in his c o u n t­
less contributions to O regon's q u al­
ity o f life.”
