August IO, 2011 ^ortlanh (Observer West Coast Rappers continued from page 11 Killa Tay, Jacka, Lee Major, RBL Posse, and plenty more. Local, up coming rappers will get the chance to share the stage with their favorite big-name musicians in the show case opening. Growing up, Miller has lost more than a few of his friends to incar ceration or gang-related deaths be cause they chose the life of “gang banging”. When he moved to Port land in 1993 and opened One Love Records on Mississippi Avenue, he watched a younger generation continue the culture of street vio lence. “We want to heal the city,” said Miller, who has offered rap music as an outlet for change in the form of the West Coast Hip-Hop Awards since its first show at the Roseland Theater in 2008. Since then, shows have sold out at Portland’s Jackson Armory and last year at Fort Mason in San Francisco. “Most rappers - i f they were not doing m usic, they might be out on the streets doing negative things, but they chose to put down guns and become a m usi cian or artist,” said M iller who hopes to see our Portland youth do the same. Humbly passing his love of mu sic onto the next generation of young hip-hop enthusiast, Miller wants to give youth the opportunity to real ize the alternatives to selling drugs or what he calls a one way ticket to hell. Further blurring the line between hip-hop and education. Miller plans to invest the proceeds of Guns Down, Mikes Up into an academy- style music program and a hip-hop museum that will honor the first pioneers of underground.
