Obonfest: A free community festival
Obonfest. a free community fes­
tival celebrating Japanese culture,
takes place Saturday, Aug 6, from 3
p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Oregon Bud­
dhist Temple, 3720 S.E. 34th Ave.
The annual celebration drawing
hundreds of festival goers every
year, features Bon Odori (public
dance) accompanied by live folk
music, Taiko performances, and
temple talks for those interested in
learning about Jodo Shinshu Bud­
dhism.
Asian crafts and popular tradi­
tional Japanese foods prepared by
tem ple m em b ers (in c lu d in g
yakisoba, yakitori, shave ice and
manju) will be for sale, along with

The Bon Odori or Obon Dance, is
a celebratory tribute to the ances­
tors that have gone before us. Danc­
ers of all ages, ethnicities and walks
of life circle a tower housing the
temple Taiko. Some dancers, prac­
ticed in their movements and dressed
in traditional Japanese yukata, form
the inner circle of the dancing pro­
cession. Others follow along, join­
ing the inclusive spirit of this “gath­
ering of joy”.
“Obonfest gives our temple the
chance to share our celebration of
the ancestors with the larger com­
munity”, said Rev. Jundo Gregory
Gibbs, minister of the Oregon Bud­
dhist Temple. “It’s a time for shed­
ding self-consciousness and just
having fun dancing. As one of my
colleagues said: ‘Just dance, just as
we are, no conniving, no calculat­
ing, no image protecting or flaunt-
ing.
