tions at a new breast m ilk dro p -o ff

in B eav erto n ’s B ethany neigh b o r­
h ood.
“W e are thrilled to be able to
provide this service and already have
a num ber o f m om s w ho are ready to
donate today,” said R uby Jason o f
the O H SU D oem becher C h ild ren ’s
H ospital.
Breastfeeding moms can help critically ill children by donating
excess milk to the OHSU Doembecher Specialty Pediatrics-

S oulchild hopes to raise aw are­
ness about breast can cer so that
you n g er w om en know the im p o r­
tance o f early detection and w hy it’s
im portant to pay attention to their
bodies.
“ E arly detection is the key to
w inning the fight against breast
can cer,” he said. “T o o often, black
w om en are diagnosed in stage three
and four w hen breast cancer is m ost
difficult to treat. Som e w om en are
afraid to seek treatm ent for fear o f
losing their breasts or their hair.
O n e ’s physical appearance is m uch
less im portant than the w ill to live.
It’s tim e to rem ove the stigm as that
are attached to this disease.” •
Soulchild w ill feature a group o f
baby are getting enough nutrients.
T hey also w ill need to get a blood
test, paid for by San Jose m o th e r’s
M ilk B ank. A pproved donors w ill
receive an ID num ber, w hich they
will use w hen m aking arrangem ents
to drop o ff their m ilk.
“W hen m y ow n d au g h ter w as
b o m six w eeks early, I w as grateful
that I was able to provide breast m ilk
for her. I feel it is one o f the reasons
she has done so w ell. It is a privilege
for m e to be in a position to help
oth er babies in o u r co m m u n ity ,”
said N eysa L arson, 35, the first
breastfeed in g m om reg istered to
donate at the new B eaverton site.
