Jumbo-Size Chess Ready for Play
Chess players step up their game -literally to play on the jumbo-sized chess board at Director Park
Portland's newest urban space at 815 S. W. Park. Ave. 'Big Chess,' features a 16 by 16 foot built-
in chess board with 25 meh chess pieces and are free to play for all ages and abilities. The pieces
are set up daily, with exceptions for scheduled events, from T p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and 2 1 5 p m to
4p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

in the Parks
Beaverton kicks-off its ninth
annual Picnics in the Park series
on Wednesday, July 13 at 6 p.m. in
Schiffler Park, 5600 S.W. Erickson
Ave.
"When people come together
in a welcoming, summer setting
like these picnics, we create a
stronger, more vibrant commu­
nity," said Mayor Denny Doyle.
"It's also a great opportunity to
have thoughtful conversations
with local leaders and fellow neigh­
bors."
Picnic-goers can follow-up
their dinner with either a perfor­
mance by the Beaverton Civic
Theatre or showing of a family-
friendly movie.
Informational booths about city
programs and services will be
available along with representa­
tives from Tualatin Valley Fire &
Rescue, the Beaverton Police
Department and Tualatin Hills
Parks & Recreation District.
All picnics begin at 6 p.m. with
the entertainment beginning at 7
p.m.
