Food Pyramid Out, ‘My Plate’ in for Healthy Eating
Simpler symbol
new visual
cue for diners
(A P) -- T he A griculture D ep art
m ent says "M y P late," its new
healthy eating sym bol, aim s to show
that nutrition doesn't have to be
com plicated.
"M y Plate" — a sim ple circle
divided into quadrants that contain
fruits, vegetables, protein and grains
— will replace U SD A 's food p y ra
m id, w hich has been around in vari
ous form s since 1992. It com es with
an accom panying w ebsite.
U SD A officials say the pyram id
w as tired out, overly com plex and
tried to com m unicate too m any d if
ferent nutrition facts at once. The
new sym bol, unveiled T hursday at
the d e p a rtm e n t w ith first lad y
M ichelle O bam a in attendance, is
sim ple and gives diners an idea o f
w hat should be on their plates w hen
they sit dow n at the dinner table.
"It's g rab b in g the co n su m e rs'
attention that w e are after this tim e,
not m aking it so com plicated that
perhaps it is a turnoff," said R obert
Post, w ho has spent tw o years
developing the plate and the w ebsite,
said the new chart is designed to be
"m ore artistic and attractive" and to
serve as a visual cue for diners.
G one are any references to sug
ars, fats o r oils, and w hat w as once
a category called "m eat and beans"
is now sim ply "proteins." N ext to
the plate is a blue circle for dairy,
w hich could be a glass o f m ilk or a
food such as cheese or yogurt.
Even though the plate is divided
into four sectio n s, the serv in g s
aren't supposed to be proportional.
Every person has different nutri
tional needs, based on age, health
and o th e r facto rs. T h e sy m b o l,
based on a new set o f dietary g u id e
lines released in January, is a g e n
eral guideline.
T he dietary g uidelines that p ro
vide the foundation for the sym bol
are released every five years. In
addition to telling people to drasti
cally reduce salt and continue lim it
ing saturated fats, the m ost recent
set o f guidelines asked diners to
enjoy food but balance calo ries by
eating less and taking sm aller por
tions. It also suggested m aking half
o f y o u r plate fruits and vegetables,
a m essage easily translated on the
din n er plate.
