Establishing paternity is very im portant — this is about giving your child access to all the benefits, infor mation and services they deserve. Paternity is the act of establish ing a legal father for your child. Usually, this is done at the hospital at the time of birth. Some parents, however, miss the hospital oppor tunity. During the one day event. Divi sion of Child Support offices will have staff available to answer ques tions, provide paternity establish ment paperwork and notary services, and, may even be able to perform free DNA testing on site. Why Does Paternity M atter? Establishing the biological father provides a child access to important family medical records; access to medical, veterans, social security, inheritance, and other benefits from both parents: and the emotional benefit of knowing who one's par ents are. Parkin« .Vea ft CD J Russell St S A 39-year-old man has been sen tenced to 40 years in prison for taking a 15-year-old girl from Seattle and forcing her to work as a prosti tute in Portland. U.S. Attorney Dwight Holton says the case sends a clear message to others "engaged in this form of modern-day slavery." U.S. District Judge Michael Mosman sentenced James Albert Jackson on Friday in Portland after Jackson earlier pleaded guilty to one count of an indictment charg ing him with sex trafficking of a minor through force. In September 2008, the girl was arrested for prostitution. Holton says she agreed to accept help from police out of fear Jackson would kill her.
