Explosion to celebrate their spirituality. The event will be held in North Portland at Antioch Missionary
Baptist Church, where mimes, drill teams, flag ministries and all praise dancers are invited. The

Speech of Hope for the Future
This weekend on May 20-21, the
president of an African American
church in Northeast Portland will
bring a message of hope to a com­
munity, which many feel have lost
their affiliation with organized reli­
gion.
UCC churches of Oregon and
western Idaho will gather to hear
Reverend Geoffrey Black, president
of the United Church of Christ (UCC),
speak to groups of faith throughout
the region. Rev. Black, the second
African-American to lead this pro­
gressive denomination, was elected
in 2009 after he served as college
chaplain at Brown and Adelphi
Universities and a pastor at Union
Theological Seminary.
Dedicated in the fight for equal
justice, African-American empow­
erm ent and com m unity im prove­
ment, the reverend will deliver a
k e y n o te a d d re s s , “ Im a g in e
W hat’s Possible,” which will take
place at the Spring Assembly gath­
ering of the Central Pacific C on­
ference on May 21. The speech
will held at the Highland Christian
Center at 7600 N ortheast Glisan
Street, and the free public event
will begin at 6:30 p.m.
