m ian looks this season — but the
fashion personalities o f the h ig h ­
school girls celebrating the end o f
the school y e ar in probably the fan ­
ciest dress they've ev er w om are
consistent: Every ballroom has its
princess, glam o u r puss, trendsetter
and rebel.
"Y ou need to co v er a lot o f girls,
and a lot o f girls w ho w ant to show
th eir personality, but you alw ays,
alw ays need certain styles," says
M ichael Shettel, the d esigner o f
bridal and evening w ear label A lfred
A ngelo.
G irls think about their dress — a
lot — a nd they started this process
m onths ago. T hat m eans that w hile
red-carpet style and runw ay looks
m ight influence som e girls, you can
count on som e w anting a retro '5 0 s
ball gow n w hile others w ant to be all
grow n up in som ething slinky w ith
a slit.

"Prom ," and covered the bases. O ne
o f the m ain characters w ears a cham ­
pagne-colored strapless w ith a short
hem line, another a bright purple
corset style, and another in a hippie-
esque halter.
H igh schoolers are a w hole "new
crop" o f girls learning to em brace
fashion and use it as a tool o f self-
expression, says Jane K eltner de

V ogue. T he prom outfit is m ore ju s t
a dress, it's a statem ent o f w ho they
w ant to be rem em bered as w ith their
old friends, and it's a glim pse at w ho
they w ill be in the future, she says.
T he film accurately m irrors the
scenes p laying out across the co u n ­
try, Shettel says. G irls go into stores
and try on som etim es dozens o f
dresses, but they know w hen they
hit the right one.
