Events Pack Calendar for Art Week
PCC festival is
free and open
the public
Portland Community College's
largest weeklong festival dedicated
to the arts is ready for its 24th sea­
son.
The 2011 Art Beat Festival at
Portland Community College is a
celebration of the arts from Mon­
day, May 9, through Friday, May
13, at all of the college's major com­
prehensive campuses.
Art Beat covers visual art, dance,
music, literature and theater, featur­
ing more than 80 events around the
PCC district. The 24th annual Art
Beat Festival is free and open to the
public. Parking at all PCC campuses
also is free during the festival.
"Art Beat reflects Portland Com­
munity College's dedication to its
students and to the larger commu­
nity," said Kristin Bryant, Sylvania
Campus Art Beat chair and compo­
sition and literature instructor. "This
celebration involves local artists as
well as PCC student and faculty
creations, including presentations,
demonstrations, performances and
workshop. The variety of events is
truly amazing."
This year's featured artist is Marie
Watt who taught for nine years at
the S y lv a n ia C am pus, is a
multidisciplinary artist who lives and
works in Brooklyn, New York, and
coming totem pole to Sylvania in
2000, earned a master's degree in
Fine A rts in P a in tin g and
P rin tm a k in g from the Y ale
University's School of Art and a
bachelor's degree in Communica­
tions and Art/Art History from
Willamette University.
Working with carved cedar, cast
bronze and collected wool blankets.
Watt draws from indigenous de­
sign principles, oral traditions and
her personal experiences.
Coming to Portland from his home
in Taiwan, award-winning guitarist
Seiko Tsai will perform from 1 to 2
p.m., Monday, May 9, Auditorium,
Moriarty Arts and Humanities Build­
ing, Cascade Campus.
Art Beat Festival featured artist Marie Watt.
Tsai will also have a night perfor­
mance from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Monday,
