Prescott St., presents “Ma Rainey’s
Black Bottom,” a story about the
legendary blues singer Ma Rainey,
opening Wednesday, April 6 with
shows continuing through May 1.
The story by Pulitzer Prize win­
ning playwright August Wilson is
set amid the initial rumblings of the
Chicago Black Renaissance, an era
that nurtured the extraordinary art­
ists L an g sto n H u g h es, L ouis
Armstrong, and Margaret Walker.
The year is 1927 and the location
is a recording studio in the heart of
the city as group of musicians and
a record producer anxiously await
the entrance of Ma Rainey, known
both for her music and her attitude.

Julianne Johnson stars in the Portland Playhouse production o f
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, a play about the legendary blues
singer known for both her music and her attitude.
What happens that day is a fiery
battle of wills as heart-strung as the
blues itself.
The play is the third installment
of W ilson’s ‘Century Cycle,’ which
chronicles the tragedies and aspira­
tions of African-Americans during
each decade of the 20th century.
The Portland Playhouse produc­
tion is directed by Kevin Jones and
Aiyana Cunningham and stars Bruce
Burthartsmeier, Duffy Epstein, Jerry
Foster, Gavin Hoffman, Deion Guice,
Julianne Johnson, W rick Jones,
Marilyn Keller, Victor Mack, An­
drea White, and Wendell Wright.
Show times are at 8 p.m. for the
Wednesday through Saturday per­
formances; and at 2 p.m. on Sun­
days. Tickets are $ 15 to $25. Call the
