On N ov. 17, P re sid e n t O bam a announced that next year, he will present the 2010 Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, to 14 out­ standing individuals. Among them are Maya Angelou, Bill Russell and John Lewis, three African Americans who over­ came barriers of hatred and rac­ ism to make historic contribu­ tions to American democracy, human dignity and civil rights. Dating back to the Adminis­ tration of President Truman, the Medal o f Freedom is “presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contribu­ tions to the security or national interests o f the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or pri­ vate endeavors.’’ Past w inners have included M other Teresa, Colin Powell, Dorothy H e ig h t, T h u rg o o d M a rsh a ll and D uke Ellington.
