Alcoholic Energy Drinks Removed from Market Ban takes effect immediately At a special m eeting on Sat­ urday, the C om m issioners of the O regon L iq u o r C o n tro l Com m ission voted 4-1 in favor o f banning alcoholic energy drinks from being sold in the state o f Oregon. The decision cam e as a re ­ sult of new inform ation regard­ ing O L C C ’s legal options con ­ cerning alcoholic energy drinks as well as a recent ruling from the U.S. Food and Drug A d­ m inistration declaring that the drinks were unsafe. “The OLCC has been con­ cerned about the health risks o f these products for som e tim e,” says OLCC Chairm an Philip Lang. “It’s unfortunate that so m any young people around the country were hurt by these products. W e’re glad that we can play a role in pre­ venting that from happening here in the future.” The seven products affected by the ban include Core High G ravity HG G reen, Core High G ravity HG O range, Lem on Lim e Core Spiked, M oonshot, Four Loko, Joose, and Max. The drinks were determ ined to be “adulterated” products by the FDA because they con­ tain the “unsafe food additive” o f caffeine. The ban on these products will be effective im ­ mediately. The temporary rule adopted today will be effective until May 18. During that time, OLCC staff will begin permanent rulemaking concerning alcoholic energy drinks. The special commission meeting was held at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 20 at the OLCC headquarters in Milwaukie.
