No one has forgotten the death of Aaron Campbell and forever will his family be reminded of the son who was shot by police last Janu ary. The Campbell family filed a wrongful death suit Nov. 3 in U.S. District Court against the Portland Police Bureau and the city. Left behind when 25-year-old Campbell was killed were four young children who need providing for, his mother and stepfather said in a statement, also expressing the diffi culties felt while watching a grand ju ry ’s actions and responses of the police union. “From observing these events, it has become clear that a lawsuit is the most effective way to make pub lic all the facts,” the statement said. The civil suit asks for an unspeci fied amount of economic and non economic damages from the city along with punitive damages from Aaron Campbell the officers, namely Officer Ronald Frashour, who fired the lethal shot. Officer Frashour, another officer, and two sergeants avoided suspen sion for improper use of deadly force. While Frashour remains on paid administrative leave, the other of ficers are back at work in North Precinct. The Multnomah County Com missioners voted last month to build the facility, culminating years of effort to replace the current leased courthouse space in Gresham, which is leaky, cramped and inadequate. “As a long-time East Multnomah County resident, I am very excited to see this courthouse finally become a reality,” said Commissioner Diane McKeel. “This project will create new jobs and provide a catalyst for eco nomic growth and development in Rockwood and East County.” Commissioner Judy Shiprack said the facility will provide important services to East County residents without making them travel down town, while relieving a bit of pres sure on the downtown Courthouse. The new courthouse will be built on county-owned property at South east 185th Avenue and Stark Street and also includes courtrooms, se curity, a data center and office space for the Multnomah County District Attorney’s office. Officials estimate the courthouse will cost $19.6 million to build. Roughly $ 15 million of the costs will he paid for with Recovery Zone Economic Development (stimulus) bonds.
