(AP) — A Pentagon spokes­ woman says recruiters have been told that they must accept gay ap­ plicants, following a federal court decision striking down the ban on gays serving openly in the military. Spokeswoman Cynthia Smith said Tuesday that top-level guid­ ance has been issued to recruiting commands informing them that the military's "don't ask, don't tell" rule has been suspended for now. Re­ cruiters also have been told 4o in­ form potential recruits that the mora­ torium could be reversed at any point. Last week, a federal judge or­ dered the military to stop enforcing the 1993 law banning openly gay service members. The Justice De­ partment is appealing the decision and has asked for a temporary stay. Graduate Starts Navy Career Navy Seaman A lexandra E. Erickson, a 2007 graduate of Wilson High School and the daughter of Terri S. Rathbun of Lewiston, Idaho and James M. Erickson, of Portland, .recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Com­ mand, Great Lakes, 111. During the eight-week program, Erickson completed a variety of train­ ing which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, wa­ ter safety and survival, and ship­ board and aircraft safety. An em­ phasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations". This exercise gives recruits the skills and confi­ dence they need to succeed in the fleet. "Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize the basic warrior at­ tributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical appli­ cation of basic Navy skills and the core values of honor, courage and commitment.
