(AP) — A Pentagon spokes­
woman says recruiters have been
told that they must accept gay ap­
plicants, following a federal court
decision striking down the ban on
gays serving openly in the military.
Spokeswoman Cynthia Smith
said Tuesday that top-level guid­
ance has been issued to recruiting
commands informing them that the
military's "don't ask, don't tell" rule
has been suspended for now. Re­
cruiters also have been told 4o in­
form potential recruits that the mora­
torium could be reversed at any
point.
Last week, a federal judge or­
dered the military to stop enforcing
the 1993 law banning openly gay
service members. The Justice De­
partment is appealing the decision
and has asked for a temporary stay.

.recently completed U.S. Navy basic
training at Recruit Training Com­
mand, Great Lakes, 111.
During the eight-week program,
Erickson completed a variety of train­
ing which included classroom study
and practical instruction on naval
customs, first aid, firefighting, wa­
ter safety and survival, and ship­
board and aircraft safety. An em­
phasis was also placed on physical
fitness.
The capstone event of boot camp
is "Battle Stations". This exercise
gives recruits the skills and confi­
dence they need to succeed in the
fleet. "Battle Stations" is designed
to galvanize the basic warrior at­
tributes of sacrifice, dedication,
teamwork and endurance in each
recruit through the practical appli­
cation of basic Navy skills and the
core values of honor, courage and
commitment.
