Wellness Village Health Events
Free screenings for
dental, vision, hearing
and diabetes
The 15th annual African American Wellness
Village and 6th annual Health
Disparities Conference takes
place this weekend bringing
together community members,
health care providers and local
and state officials to generate
solutions to health disparities.
The conference focuses on
diabetes and will be held Fri
day, Oct. 15 at the Airport
Holiday Inn from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Sal ly Norby, executive director of the Ameri
can Diabetes Association, will share the facts
about diabetes— particularly diabetes among
African Americans, the largest disparity in
diabetes mortality.
The Wellness Village, organized by the
African American Health Coalition, will pro
vide much needed life saving health screen
ings as well as health and wellness information at
no charge.
The village takes place Saturday, Oct. 16 at
the Blazers Boys and Girls Club, 5250 N.E.

Gets Bicycle

A remodeled traffic signal that
includes a bicycle-only signal dis
play has been added to the inter

The new signal was turned on

improvement o f the intersection
that is being implemented along
with the installation o f streetcar
tracks.
Transportation officials say the
public should pay close attention
to the signals, signs and lane
markings and be aware o f fel
low travelers in the vicinity o f
the intersection, which is adja
cent to an on-ramp for Interstate
5.
The new traffic signal for bi
cyclists provides a signal control
that separates the through move
ment o f bicycles from the heavy
right-turn movement o f vehicles.
It is designed to eliminate con
flicts between motorists and cy
clists and improve overall safety.
