A survey o f food box recipients in the Portland
m etro area finds that unem ploym ent has forced m ore
people to seek em ergency food w hile m ore fam ilies fall
into poverty.
But thanks to broad com m unity support, the O r­
egon F ood B ank and its netw ork distributed record
am ounts o f n utritious food as an offset to the bad
econom ic tim es.
The O regon Food B ank N etw ork conducts the
H unger F actors S urvey every oth er y ear to better
understand the causes and conditions o f people re ­
ceiving em ergency food.
"The 2010 h u nger survey underscores that hunger
is an incom e issue," says R achel B ristol, the ch ief
executive officer o f the O regon Food Bank. "W ith so
m any im pacted, w e are heartened by the caring re ­
sponse o f the food industry, com m unity volunteers
and financial supporters w ho have allow ed O FB to
m ore than double the volum e o f food it d istributed in
ju s t three years.

at a slo w er pace, the food bank netw ork also reported.
"A lthough w e're not out o f the w oods yet, it a p ­
pears that the do u b le-d ig it increases in em ergency-
food d istribution via the O regon Food B ank N etw ork
is beginning to level," B ristol says.
D uring 2009-10, the O regon Food B ank N etw ork
d istributed 72 m illion pounds o f food to people in need
th roughout O regon and C lark C ounty.
T he survey reports com e on the heels o f the 2009
U .S. C ensus B ureau poverty report, w hich reports that
the ranks o f the w orking-age poor clim b ed to the
highest level since the 1960s, leaving one in seven
A m ericans in poverty.
"W e need the public w ill to end h u nger by ensuring
all residents have access to good nutrition, so our kids
can learn in school and w orkers can give 100 percent
on the jo b . W e need to re-establish o u r m iddle-class
by creating jo b s that allow fam ilies to thrive and
contribute to their com m u n ities, rath er than strug­
gling d ay-to-day ju s t to survive," B ristol says. "W e
urge C ongress to begin this y ear by passing a strong
C hild N utrition Act."
