Highland Haven Scholarship Banquet
The non-profit Highland Haven
will present its 24th annual Sam
Johnson M emorial Scholarship
Banquet on Friday, Oct. 8 at 6:30
p.m. at Concordia University in
northeast Portland.
Margaret Carter, deputy director
for programs in the Oregon Depart­
ment of Human Services and a former
state senator will be the keynote
speaker. Rakiyah Johnson, Miss
O regon’s Outstanding Teen for
2010 will be the guest performer.
The local fo u n d atio n has
awarded more than 150 scholarships
since its inception.

Shevette Bonner
A funeral for Shevette Bonner was held
Tuesday at First AME Zion Church.
She was born S hevette M ercedes
Domingue in San Francisco, on March 20,
1963. She moved to Portland in 1969 with
her mother and two brothers. She attended
Abernathy Elementary School and gradu­
ated from Cleveland High School in 1981. In
the early 80s she enjoyed dancing and hanging out
with her friends. One of Shevette's favorite jobs was
being the birthday announcer at Ferrell’s Ice Cream
Parlor!
Later, Shevette enlisted into Air Force Reserves,
where she found her love of travel. Some of her
adventures included Japan, Guam, Hawaii and Alaska.

A funeral tor Joseph H. Henderson was held Friday
at Bethel AME Church.
He was bom on July 2, 1928 in Chicago. At the age
of 14, he moved with his family toGalesburg, III., where
he graduated from high school in 1948. It was in high
school that he met the love of his life, Mary Ellis Tyler.
Following his graduation, he served in the Army for
two years.
In 1954, Joseph and Mary were wed and subse­
quently moved to Portland. In the same year, Joe
became a member of the Prince Hall Masonry. For over
30 years he served at all levels of the organization and
was elected Prince Hall Grand Master of Oregon, Idaho
and Montana.
Joe loved the outdoors, bowling, fishing, traveling,
was an avid sports fan and maintained a beautiful rose
garden at his home. He committed his time to various

Highland Access, Reentry and Re­
covery Program, a mentoring ser­
vice for returning prisoners and their
families.

While traveling to Japan she met Bobby
Bonner. They were married on Dec. 28,
1992. Shevette’s beautiful baby boy,
Anthony John Bonner, was bom on July
4,1993.
Shevette was a determined and focused
woman. While raising her son she was able
to finish college, learn how to drive and
buy her own home.
Besides being survived by her son and
her two brothers, John Dominguez Jr. and
Marquis Anthony “Tony” Domingue, she was blessed
to have an amazing extended family. Shevette was truly
a good friend, keeping in contact with many friends for
30 plus years. She was an amazing mother, sister and
friend. She will be missed.
