‘Pink Sunday’ events at Emanuel
Pink Sunday, Inspiration, E du ca­
tion and H ope w ill be held Sunday,
O ct. 3 at L egacy E m anuel A trium ,
501 N. G raham , from noon to 5 p.m .
Pink Sunday w as developed to
p artn er w ith local churches to ed u ­
c ate c o n g re g a tio n s ab o u t b re a st
c an c e r and the im portance o f early
d etectio n.
T he event w ill feature speakers,
health exhibits, su rv iv o rs’ reco g n i­
tion, and a tribute to w om en lost to
breast cancer, including a reading
from a theatrical production about a
w om an w ho has a life ch an g in g e x ­
perience w hich causes her to q u e s­
tion faith, fam ily and friends.

Statistic show that the overall in­
cidence rate o f breast cancer is 10
percent low er in A frican A m erican
w om en than w hite wom en. Y et breast
cancer m ortality rates are ironically
higher for A frican A m erican w om en.
Factors contributing to the higher
mortality rates am ong African A m eri­
can w om en include differences in
access and utilization o f early detec­
tion. Studies further suggest in addi­
tion to higher risk factors, A frican
A m erican w o m en a re n ’t g ettin g
screened for breast cancer as often as
w hite w om en and w hen they do it is
later in life. O ften the m am m ogram s
a re
not
ro u tin e
s c r e e n in g
mammograms, but rather they ’ re done
because the w om an or her doctor felt
a m ass in the w om en’s breast.
