Jefferson Concerts to Build Support
Events to
benefit once-
thriving music
program
Furthering its efforts to give back
to the communities in which it does
business, Hasson Company Real
tors will sponsor the upcoming Rose
City Music Festival, a week-long
event beginning on Saturday, Sept.
25 that will benefit the arts and mu
sic program at Jefferson High
School.
For the majority o f its 100 years
in north Portland, Jefferson High
School was known as the city ’s
“School o f Performing A rts,” re
ceiving award after award for its
band and choir teams. The school
reveled in its reputation for out
standing dram atic perform ances.
And yet, after the nearly constant
stream o f budget cutbacks began
in the 1980s, the school’s once-
thriving arts and music program
was reduced to nonexistence.
M othballed and deserted, the
th r e e - s to r y m u sic w in g at
Jefferson - which includes a band
room, choir room, band library,
piano rehearsal rooms, music edu
cation room and choir library
has sat unused for more than 15
years. Dozens o f like-new uni
forms and choir robes hang from
their hangers waiting for students
to return.
Enter the Rose City Music Fes
tival! Developed as a fundraiser
by the Jefferson High Alumni As
sociation, the festival’s mission
is to raise enough money to bring
a full program o f music, graphic
arts and drama back to the school,
as well as the elem entary and Pink Martini will perform in concert at Jefferson High School on Saturday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. in a
middle schools included in the benefit to revive the school's once-thriving music program.
Portlanders are finding new ways to get what they need while spending
their time, money and energy on what matters most.
