unity o f purpose and action that has defined the
A m erican experience through m ost o f the past
234 years, but w hich has been sorely lacking in
recen t tim es.
T he O ne N ation rally is intended to rekindle
that spirit and to dem and the change w e voted
for in 2008.
M illions o f A m ericans w ant to know - if w e
O n Saturday, Oct. 2, the N ational
U rban L eague w ill jo in a coalition o f
m ore than 150 progressive o rg an iza­
tions and tens o f thousands o f A m eri­
cans at a national rally for jo b s, ed u ca­
tion and social ju stic e at the Lincoln
M em orial in W ashington, DC.
The goal o f the O ne N ation W orking T o ­
gether rally is to galvanize A m ericans o f every
race, religion and w alk o f life to dem and sw ift
action that w ill put A m erica back to w ork and
pull A m erica back together.
I w ill be a featured speaker along w ith a
num ber o fo th e r hum an rights, civil rights, union
and progressive thought leaders.
The A m erican people are in a restless m ood
and rightfully so. The latest em plo y m en t report
show s that the econom y lost an o th er 54,000
jo b s last m onth. O verall unem p lo y m en t has
clim bed to 9.6 percent, w ith A frican A m erican
unem ploym ent rising to 16.3 p er­
cent and Latino jo b lessn ess now
at 12 percent. W hile m uch o f this
is the result o f the persistent great
recession w hich began in 2007,

shared prosperity for all w ho are w illing to w ork
for it, o r are w e a nation that favors only the
p rivileged few ?
T he A m erican people w ant to know -- if
ed ucation is the gatew ay to prosperity and a life
o f m eaning, w hy are so m any o f o ur schools
failing so m any o f o u r children?
A nd do w e believe in the religious pluralism
and freedom that first brought o ur founders to
these shores, o r w ill w e rem ain silent in the face
o f faith-based bigotry?
T hese are som e o f the issues that have d e­
fined the N ational U rban League m ovem ent for
the past 100 years.
T he O ct. 2 rally at the Lincoln M em orial w ill
