Begins September 2, 2010 Tony Greiner sets up a program at the Cascade Campus Library of Portland Community College for students to save money by reusing college textbooks. Program Saves Cost on Textbooks c o n t i n u e d f r o m page 3 books available will mean that students who cannot afford their textbooks (or who have not re ceived their financial aid checks at the start o f the term) will be able to do their homework assignments and readings while waiting for their financial situation to improve. "While one copy o f the texts will not meet all the possible demand, the project should be an aid to student success and reten tion," he said. If the trial proves successful, Greiner said he and the commit tee will look for a permanent funding source. Greiner said the per-term cost o f the program would drop considerably because it will need to replace the texts only for those courses that have changed books. "At the end o f the fall term, and again at the end o f the aca demic year, this project will be evaluated to see if it should be expanded, m odified or d is carded," Greiner said. Pioneering Student Remembered He integrated Little Rock schools in 1957 (AP) — Jefferson Thomas was fast and athletic and often played pickup basketball with white stu dents while growing up in Little Rock in the 1950s. But when Thomas becam e one o f nine black students to inte g ra te A rk a n sa s' la rg e st h igh school, many o f his basketball buddies w eren't happy to see him in their classes. "One o f them said, 'Well I don't mind playing basketball or football with you or anything. You guys are good at sports. Everybody knows that, but you're ju st not sm art enough to sit next to me in the class room,"' Thomas recalled years later. The pioneer in school desegre gation died Sunday at an extended- care living facility in Columbus, Ohio, o f pancreatic cancer at age 67, according to Carlotta Walls LaNier, who also enrolled at Central High School in 1957 and is president of the Little Rock Nine Foundation. The integration fight was a first real test o f the federal government's resolve to enforce a 1954 Supreme Court order outlawing racial segre- and Thelm a M othershed Wair. C lin to n issued a sta te m e n t M onday, calling Thomas "a true hero, a fine public servant, and profoundly good man."
