ties through school, fam ily, com m u
nity groups and even careers. O ur
hope is that U N O participants will
turn their initial excitem ent into a
lifelong interest in the natural w orld.”
Prior to the overnight, children
attend tw o orientation classes to
learn tracking, w ildlife observation
skills and the “ Leave N o T race”
c am p in g p h ilo so p h y , w h ich are
used during their cam ping ex p eri
ence. C am pers arrive at the over
night ready to learn how to set up
tents and build a cam psite. A fter
activities that include sw im m ing and
solo hikes, they m ake dinner, set o ff
on a night hike and then return to
cam p for s ’m ores around the cam p
fire. In the m orning, they prepare
breakfast on cam p stoves, learn m ore
about local w ildlife from naturalists
and park rangers, and clean up the
cam psite before going hom e.
Since 2000, U N O has taken m ore
than 3,000 children on cam ping trips
and provided after-school p rogram
m ing for m ore than 400 youths. The
program received the A ssociation
o f Zoos and A quarium s ’ 2008 Excel
lence in D iversity aw ard.
