Why should inner north and northeast Portland be forced once again to scatter our children into other high schools and displace our own identity as a com m unity? Jefferson High School has been hurt by 40 years o f school district reform s that have not worked, but instead contributed to parents sending their children to other schools. This trend must stop. The district should take steps to improve the academic offerings at Jefferson and support an envi- ronment that will enable Jefferson students to succeed. Tony Hopson, à Jefferson gradu ate who leads the highly successful public charter school Self Enhance ment, Inc., said it best, “The same black and white children and fami lies who shop on Alberta and Mis sissippi and walk their dogs through Unthank Park and who live in the Jefferson neighborhood will at tend Jefferson when the district finally respects the neighborhood enough to provide the appropri ate long-term resources, when it hires quality leadership, when it provides a rigorous curriculum , when it changes the boundaries and when it lets those o f us who know how to cross racial lines to support, enhance and motive all children have the full opportunity ZZùdàw <£ Jïady Sïiôiïvp 3t. £. <£ ¿antean 3tt)dge Tatton I Deacfaen / fäeuiuatht Worship Services: Sundays: Church School—9:00 A.M. The superintendent’s plan to downscale Benson High School as a four-year school into a spe cialized tw o-year program also comes on the backs o f P ortland’s m inority and lower incom e popu lations.
