On Friday, June 4, humans get to join the party at Zoo Brew, where some of the best beer in the Northwest will combine with one of the greatest bands ever to come out of Or­ egon: the Crazy 8s. Inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame in 2007, this ska-rock band will provide the microbrew festival’s soundtrack, playing live on the zoo’s main stage as attend­ ees sample beers from more than 20 local microbreweries. Zoo Opens Early for Summer The Oregon Zoo is welcoming summer with longer hours, new ex­ hibits and a host of seasonal special events. Zoo gates will open at 8a.m. and close at 6 p.m. Visitors may remain on grounds until 7 p.m. “Many of our visitors like getting here early to beat the crowds,” said Jim Gilbert, the zoo’s guest services manager. “Not all the animals are out at 8 a.m., but it’s interesting to watch as keepers prepare the exhib­ its for the day. It’s also neat to see the animals as they first enter their exhibits — they’re usually quite active then.” Among the zoo’s early risers are eagles, salmon, frogs, turtles and waterfowl m the Great Northwest Longer hours and more events ¡ead t0 a summer of fun at the exhibit; penguins and Inca terns in Oregon Zoo the Penguinarium; birds in the Vollum Aviary; naked mole rats and spiny mice in the Africa exhibit; fish and reptiles in the Amazon Flooded Forest; and sometimes elephants.
