It took K rista W hite, the C ycle 14 w in n er o f
“ A m e ric a ’s N ext T op M odel,” alm ost halfw ay
through the com petition before she em erged as
a front-runner. B ut w hen the 2 5-year-old from
Pine B luff, A rk., snagged h er first w in, she d id n ’t
let go. She rode that streak all the w ay to the M ay
12 finale.
T hat kind o f determ ination isn ’t surprising
w hen one considers that she first tried out for the
TV reality show in 2003 and d id n ’t stop until she
m ade it.
W hite sees her w in as an im portant step in a
culture w ith very few representations o fb eau tifu l
dark-skinned w om en like one o f the icons she
chose to em ulate in the com petition, G race Jones.
“ I ju s t hate that th e re ’s nobody no w ,” she told
the Los A ngeles Tim es. “ I have to look so far back
to find so m ebody I can use as an inspiration, w ho
looks like m e and I can ch an n el.”
