Huge Spring Planting

Thanks to m ore than 200 volunteers w ho
participated in the first-day-of-spring p lan t­
ing last m onth, 300 large street and yard trees
w ere planted in the neighborhoods o f C'ully,
M a d is o n S o u th , R o se C ity P a rk an d
R osew ay— an over 100 percent increase from
the num ber planted last year.
“ It’s im portant to have trees that capture
storm w ater and keep it from getting in o ur
sew er system to beautify neighborhoods,
enhance property values, and to provide
cooling in the sum m er tim e,” said Saltzm an,
w ho oversees the B ureau o f Environm ental
Services, a Friends o f T rees project partner
via the G rey to G reen Initiative.
Included in the volunteers figure w ere
about a dozen em ployees from the Port o f
Portland, the sponsor o f the com m unity plant­
ing.
