A Freedom Rider’s Story Bernard Lafayette Jr. is a long time civil rights activist and orga nizer and who was a leader in the 1960s Freedom Riders movement. He played a leading role in early organizing o f the Selma, Ala. vot ing rights cam paign, and was a m em ber o f the N ashville Student M ovem ent. Lafayette worked closely with groups such as the Student Non violent Coordinating Committee, the Southern Christian Leadership Con ference, and the American Friends Service Committee. He went on to work on the 1966 Chicago Open Housing Movement and later became president o f the American Baptist Theological Semi nary. Lafayette now holds the post o f Senior Fellow at the University o f Rhode Island, where he heads the Center for Nonviolence and Peace Bernard Lafayette Studies. The center promotes nonviolence education using a curriculum based on the principles and methods o f Martin Luther King Jr.
