A Freedom Rider’s Story
Bernard Lafayette Jr. is a long­
time civil rights activist and orga­
nizer and who was a leader in the
1960s Freedom Riders movement.
He played a leading role in early
organizing o f the Selma, Ala. vot­
ing rights cam paign, and was a
m em ber o f the N ashville Student
M ovem ent.
Lafayette worked closely with
groups such as the Student Non­
violent Coordinating Committee, the
Southern Christian Leadership Con­
ference, and the American Friends
Service Committee.
He went on to work on the 1966
Chicago Open Housing Movement
and later became president o f the
American Baptist Theological Semi­
nary.
Lafayette now holds the post o f
Senior Fellow at the University o f
Rhode Island, where he heads the
Center for Nonviolence and Peace

The center promotes nonviolence
education using a curriculum based
on the principles and methods o f
Martin Luther King Jr.
