Claudette Colvin C laudette C olvin is a p io n eer o f the A frican A m erican civil rights m ovem ent. She d is o b e y e d M o n tg o m e ry , A labam a’s bus segregation law on M arch 2,1955, nine months before the better known Rosa Parks did, but her case was not pub­ licized at the tim e by black leaders. W hen told to get-up from her seat, C olvin refused and w as forcibly taken o ff the bus by tw o police officers and taken to jail. A t the tim e, local black leaders believed that C o lv in ’s case w as an appropriate one to litigate all the w ay to the Suprem e C ourt, as part o f a bro ad er effort to o v er­ turn segregation law s in the South. But because o f her illegitim ate preg­ nancy, local black leaders felt that her case w o u ld n ’t have a chance. So the decision w as m ade to w ait until they had a p la in tiff w ho w as m ore upstanding. C olvin w ent to the S uprem e C ourt to challenge the law that led to the end o f segregation, and later com m ented that Rosa Parks w as the right person to repre­ sent the civil rights battle.
