Bobbi Gary A service for Bobbi Gary who passed peacefully on Jan. 7,2010, was held Jan. 19 at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. She was bom on Dec. 25,1923 in Muskogee, Okla., the youngest o f five children bom to Edna Mae (McCormick) Mosley and Whaley Mosley. The family relocated to Kansas City, Mo. After graduating from Booker T. Washington High School, she began to show the spirit and boldness that she came to be known for, announcing to her family her intention to "go west" to attend business school. After arriving in Oregon, she quickly landed a job at the bustling Kaiser Shipyards as a tool marker and became an active participant in the development o f wom en’s programs in the Vanport community, now known as Delta Park. Before too long, she caught the eye o f a fine, young Tuskegee man, Frederick Douglas Gary, Jr., and their courtship led to a marriage that lasted for nearly 30 years. They had one son who died in infancy, then four daughters. Pride in her race, a sense o f responsibility for children and families and social justice for all were her guiding principles. Her resume is a roll call ofdiverse community, state and national affiliations that included the board o f directors for the Portland Metropolitan Steering Committee; Portland’s War on Poverty program; and the board o f the Black United Fund o f Oregon. She was a member o f the Black United Front, and the first black female president o f a Portland Public Schools PTA [Eliot School, now the Young W omen’s Leadership Academy]. She was served on boards for Church Women United, Homeland Missions, Older W omen’s League; McKenzie River Gathering Founda tion, Portland Gray Panthers, and National Gray Panthers. She was Oregon Mother o f the Year 1st runner-up in 1986, and chair o f the Oregon Office o f Long-Term Care Ombudsman; and member of the National Association o f Black Social Workers. She was proud o f the many rallies she attended for wom en’s rights, workers rights, and quality public education, and loved to recall the number o f times she was arrested outside the South African Consulate for protesting apartheid. Bobbi Gary s constant quest for knowledge led her to return to school in the early 70’s, and she proudly received her degree from Portland State University in the School o f Social Work. She took graduate courses specializing in black gerontology, studying black aging. Her work history included employment as an Oregon State Extension agent assisting low-income families with financial planning and access to resources. She combined social service and activism while serving as an assistant director o f LIFE Center, as a case worker at the Urban League’s Multicultural Senior C enter; as a volunteer coordinator o f the Marie Smith Center o f Volunteers o f America, and sitting on numerous boards and community committees. She leaves to mourn her memory her daughters, Sharon Gary-Smith o f Portland; Carla Gary, o f Eugene; Linda Gary, Portland; and Daria Bradford o f Vancouver; four granddaughters, five great granddaughters; two special “daughters”, Gloria J. Fluker and LaVeme Springer-Green, and three special “sons”, Robert Boyer, Thomas Eugene Miller, and Dennis G. Payne, as well as a host o f other family and friends.
