Jazz Artist on Blues Trail
(AP) - Jazz vocalist Cassandra
W ilson can easily explain why the
M ississippi Blues Trail would em
brace jazz artists.
"Blues is an essential com po
nent o f jazz. It's like one of the
building blocks. It's what we use
in order to navigate changes. You
always have to keep close ties to
that original sound and feeling,"
W ilson said T hursday after a
blues m arker was unveiled in her
honor at a Jackson, Miss, school
she attended as a child.
The cerem ony drew a crowd of
some 200 students, friends and Cassandra Wilson
other musicians, including singer
D orothy M oore and bluesm an
Bobby Rush.
W ilson, a two-tim e Grammy
A ward-winner whose eclectic rep
ertoire has included covers o f
blues tunes, absorbed music from
her earliest years. Her father,
Herman Fowlkes Jr., was a bassist
who played with blues harm onica
icon Sonny Boy W illiam son II.
The m arker is the 100th on the
trail, created as part of a project
