B ut for the Fire Protection Technology program , the num ber o f minority slid from 9.6 per cent in 2006 to 8.5 percent in 2008. In 2005 A frican A m ericans made up ju st 1.7 percent o f the fire fighting trainees, which went up to 2 percent the next year, and then down to 1.5 percent in 2008. Asians and Pacific Islanders rose from 2.1 percent of the tire sci ences students in 2005 to 2.2 percent the next year, and then dropped to 1.7 percent in 2008. Native Americans rose from less than one percent in 2005 to 1.3 percent in 2(X)8. Hispanics de clined from 5.2 percent to 4 per cent in this time period. PCC did not have num bers for its Em ergency M anagem ent program because it’s in its first year, and d id n 't get num bers for its E m e rg e n c y T elecom m unicaitons/911 D is patch program by press time. “ I think sim ply the w ord is n o t g e ttin g o u t,” sa id C aro l B ru n eau , an in stru c to r w ith PC C ’s Em ergency Telecom m u n ic a tio n s^ ! 1 D ispatcher pro gram. Jacki Cypher, the lead para m edic instructor, said that get ting into her program is “very rigorous,” and is often m ore dif ficult than becom ing a regis tered nurse. She noted that her program attracts a very specific type o f person, who has worked for years in the medical field and has their sights set on becom ing a param edic. W hen asked if her program w as doing anything to div er sify its program , she responded that it w asn 't because the pro gram attracts a very narro w group o f people. “It’s an equal playing field," said C ypher o f the people who enter the program . “We d o n ’t care if th e y 're male, fem ale, or anything about them as long as they can do the jo b .” M any o f the skills taught at PCC in em ergency services are expected to be in high demand, pay decent, and offer opportu nities for advancement. For in stance, the dem and for E m er gency M edical T echnicians is expected to ju m p 19 percent be tween 2(XX> and 2016, according to the Bureau o f Labor Statis tics. But som e program s at PCC are h aving tro u b le attractin g candidates. Robertson said that th e sc h o o l d o e s n 't p ro d u c e enough 911 dispatchers, which start out earning $19 an hour, to fill demand. “We ju st c a n ’t crank them o u t f a s t e n o u g h ,” s a id Robertson, who noted that she h a s h ad 4 0 to 6 0 s lo ts she co u ld n 't fill. But in other program s, the com m unity college is having the opposite problem . Since the Sept. 11, 2(X)I terrorist attacks and Hurricane Katrina in 2(X)5 there has been a surge in de mand for people with training in em ergency m anagement, and the college has had to w ait-list people for its program .
