O regon Z oo D irector Tony V ecchio attributed the record year to the popularity o f its d i­ nosaur exhibit last sum m er and the arrival of Samudra, the char- ism atic baby elephant who has stolen the hearts o f zoo visitors. Vecchio noted that zoo atten­ dance m ight have been even higher if severe w inter storm s hadn't forced the zoo to close for nearly a week in late Decem­ ber, a peak tim e for its popular ZooLights w inter light display. Events such as the sum m er concert series and the W orld Animal Festival also brought in b ig n u m b e rs, w h ile th e in ­ creased revenues help the zoo fund its many conservation and education program s. The first tim e the zoo's atten- dance topped a million was dur­ ing 1962-63, the fiscal year im ­ m ed iately fo llo w in g P acky's birth in April 1962. The baby pachyderm drew 1,010,964 spec­ tators from all over the N orth­ west, eager to see the first el­ e p h a n t b o rn in th e U n ite d States in 44 years. It w asn't until 1988-89 that the zoo broke the m illion mark again. Since then, the zoo has w elcom ed m ore than a million guests in 17 o f the past 20 years.
