A celebration of life for Charles Strong will be held Friday, June 12 at 1 p.m. atC ox
and Cox Funeral Home, 2736 N.E. Rodney Ave., with Rev. Johnnie Sampson 111 offici
ating.
Mr. Strong suffered complications of a stroke he had in 2004 after the death of his
mother. On June 2,2009, he laid down for a routine nap and slipped away to be with the
many family members who passed before him.
He was bom on Feb. 4, 1955 to Earl and Eleanor Strong Sr., the second of four
children blessed to this union. He attended John Ball Elementary and Peninsular
Middle School, Roosevelt High School, and ultimately graduated from John Adams
High School in 1975. He played football, baseball and was a scholar in Karate. He was
well known in his community, both in the early to late 60’s when the “village” was still
alive and later in life when he carried that charisma into the community where he
currently resided and will surely be missed by friends and family and neighbors as
well.
He married his lifetime friend of the family, Vanessa Cherry-Strong; and married and
divorced two other times in his lifetime. He regretfully leaves to hold in her memories,
his common law wife and caregiver Kim Blackmon who he had planned to marry in
August.
Charles fathered one biological child, Jacque Strong of Seattle and has three step
children; Ebonique Manus, Erica Cherry-May and Andre Clayton, all of Portland; and
seven grandchildren. He is also survived by four siblings, Earl Strong Jr., Larry Asa
Turner, Patricia Strong-Paxton, and Mercedes Dawes, all of Portland.
His youngest sister, Alicia Elaine Strong preceded him in death in 1999.
M emorial services for Thelma U nthank Brown will be held at St. Phillip The Deacon
Episcopal Church 120 N.E. Knott St., Monday June 15 at 11 a.m.
